StickCaster

July 22, 2005

The course “2D-Interfaces” was about finding an innovative solution for a web-radio capable handheld device. It should, like iPod, have the potential to get a “cultish object”. As a first step I made an analysis of “cult”; what is a cult, how does it arise, what is its definition?
My conclusion was, that for a thing to get cultic, it must

- be innovative
- be accepted by the masses for a certain time
- have a community of enthusiasts/connoisseurs around it

To be really innovative, listening to IP-Radio was not enough in my opinion. So “StickCaster” is also a Podcast player and recorder. The new thing about it was, that there is no computer needed for podcast creation. Think about creating your new podcast while waiting for the bus… Real instant podcasting!

My solution is a combined player/recorder. It can download, record and upload Podcasts directly. No computer is needed for uploading one’s podcasts.
The device has only two buttons. They can be pushed, pulled and turned. For more information on the “StickCaster”, please see the project documentation.
